Alone Again, Naturally

Alone Again, Naturally

I'm three sessions into an introduction to illustration summer class at MCAD, and the above is something I did for an assignment. I do a lot of pen drawings, but never before have I taken one into illustrator, livetraced it, and colored it. I'm pretty happy with the result and would love to work in this way more, hopefully eventually getting confident enough to do T-design, and other more serious work in the style.

Even though I've been doing illustration for a while, I've never taken a class specifically
on it. I'm a studio art major at a liberal arts college, so I'm used to fine art classes. It's definitely refreshing, and surprisingly helpful to take a class on Illustration. The instructor, Allen Brewer, is a great working illustrator, and another nice perk of the class is being able to talk to someone who actually works in the industry (I don't know any other illustrators personally).

Logo Design for MPIRG

voter outreach logo, originally uploaded by samanpwbb.

I did this "no youth vote left behind" logo for a friend who works for MPIRG(http://www.mpirg.org/). Originally the design had a very abstract hand holding a pen. After a lot of revisions and some rethinking, we came up with this design. I think it does a much better job of expressing the fact that the campaign is about getting those who aren't the stereotypical voter to vote. This may or may not be the final version, but I'm happy with it.

New Sketchbook

Here are a few spreads from one of my current sketchbooks. The idea is to create a sketchbook that's sort of like a piece of art. No T-shirt design sketches, no logo brainstorming, all experimentation and exploration and stuff; each page is like a canvas or something. I'm about a third into it, and its probably got something like 120 pages. Its got a lot of collage, and its all mixed media, which is great for experimenting with new things and just seeing what happens. We'll see what happens as I keep working at it.

Pokemans!

So I grew up on Pokemon. This is my homage. I hope to do many more. They are great fun.
